We eat blood and all our friends are dead

I played through the new WoD mobilegame a few days ago and thought that I could start writing in the blog again. I’m probably going to do the texts in english from now on as that feels more productive somehow.

The game tells the story of two young people being changed into vampires, and their struggles as they try to to survive in the world of the undead. It’s a rather grotesque, dark story at times (as expected from the World of Darkness franchice), with some really bloody descriptions of gore, so if that’s not your thing it’s better to leave this game untouched.

The characters were nice and relatable for a young hipster like myself. I kept laughing out loud at the jokes and references, and I could totally see many of the WoD-characters from our tabletop sessions in the people the story introduced. It was just dark enough, although the last chapter made me feel a bit sick with the ”licking a collapsed lung” stuff. The writing was really good, interesting and also quite easily understandable, even though the vocabulary was sometimes challenging for a non-native speaker.

The gameplay was simple enough for most of the game, but during one of the last chapters I got stuck and kept dying, no matter what I said. I had to actually google the correct answers and felt really frustrated: the choises made no sense to me, even though I understood what I was supposed to do. It didn’t seem like a very good design choise, and almost ruined the otherwize great experience.

I’m not sure if I liked the art. The UI was nice and simple, but the drawings people sent were a bot too abstract for my taste. It didn’t really bother during the game, just left me wondering if I was supposed to recognize something in them or not (because I definetly didn’t.) The sounds were nice, and I was happy there were no jump-scares, because I really, really do not like them at all.

The game apparently costs around 5e in appstore. Steam sells it bundled together with a Mage game, and together they cost around 10e. I would say the story is worth the 5e, but because of the annoying gameplay in the end, I’m happy I didn’t actually buy it myself.

4-/5, nice story, nice characters, okay art, no bugs, didn’t make me pissed off about gender/political/other issues and perfect for playing on a phone. Gameplay is irrational, but google will get you through it if you just want to see the story.

Here’s a link to the Steam page.
